The Dark Cathedral, Confrontation with The Faceless One, Session Twenty Seven

The next morning I quickly moved to my scrying device and made the preparations to view the heroes as they struggled within the darkness of the Myrkul temple. Viewing them had become more dangerous every day as they fought the Ebon Triads cultists. Something was just not right, but I was anxious to watch the heroes strike the so called Faceless One. The five were sharpening blades and preparing spells then had a quick bite to eat. As I watched them travel the halls of the labyrinth, I could see the looks of determination on their faces. It was only moments before they were at the secret door making ready to strike quickly. As Grog opened the door it was very obvious that they were entering an ancient shrine of Myrkul. The party was quickly under assault; a monstrous fiendish centipede struck quickly as cultist’s flung arcane magic upon the heroes. The chance for surprise was obviously at an abrupt end, and the heroes responded with both blade and magic of their own. As Nyphystra brought her mercurial great sword and Grog his long spear the two fought the centipedes strike for strike, as they slayed it another appeared in its stead. HS came in with the divine magic of Lathander at the ready, and Twexlin took aim with his bow as he was struck with cultist magic. Whie the party tried to gain the upper hand, Cha’ti and his wolf Shadow moved to the other entry of the shrine. Cha’ti was greeted by a sinister undead creature called an Allip, and he and his companion were struck with paralysis from the evil creatures attack. As the battle raged, cultists continued to assault the heroes with magic. Nyphystra was engulfed in a web as others in the party were struck with sonic attacks. As the Allip moved to attack the party, HS turned it with divine power. As the battle progressed one cultist after another was killed or on the retreat. Cha’ti overcame his debilitating state and was back in the fray summoning creatures to help push back the cultist. As the party regrouped the Faceless One showed himself and struck with a lethal lightning bolt almost killing Grog who was under the effects of a charm like spell. The Myrkul leader summoned a fiendish ape to his defense as the party moved closer. Nyphystra, and Grog fought the Ape as Twexlin fired arrows hitting both ape and cultist, and sending the Faceless One into a retreat. An elemental summoned by Cha’ti took chase melting its way through the doors the Faceless One fled through. As the heroes followed they were met with another lightning bolt, and the Faceless One stood his ground preparing to die for his cause. Cha’ti sent his companion into the fray tripping the wizard and allowing the others to come in and finish him off before he could get another spell off. One cultist appeared to have fled through the Labyrinth as the heroes cornered the leader of the Ebon Triad. Nyphystra struck a deadly blow to The Facless One, and stood over his lifeless body. The battle was hard fought, but as they looked to regroup a horrible shudder rocked the shrine, and a foreboding presence was instantly felt. It was as if something had been awakened by the fall of the Ebon Triads mage. All the heroes gaped in surprise. I had a bad feeling about what might happen next, and I felt hopeless just watching from afar.
