Forgotten Realms: Age of Worms
The Dark Cathedral, The Rise and Fall of The Ebon Aspect, Session Twenty Eight
I continued to scry the heroes as they searched the Myrkul shrine. I could only imagine what kind of foul deeds were acted out in the stone rooms of the evil place. The party gathered up valuables that were easily secured, and completed searching the laboratory. They then left the area healing and buffing as they hurried through the labyrinth. The underground complex shuddered a couple times as they raced out, but it was not until a beast like roar broke the eerie silence of the Dark Cathedral that stopped them in their tracks. One last chance to call upon divine magic to help prepare them for battle, and Grog was through the last door into the main entry hall. Grog tried to use stealth, but the creature they encountered was too wary to be caught off-guard. In the main hall near the dark pool stood a large multi armed creature they later realized was known as the Ebon Aspect. In front of the Ebon Aspect groveled one of the remaining acolytes of Myrkul who had escaped the last battle. Before Grog could prepare an attack, the creature was on the offensive, but Grog was able to get a good stab in as the creature rushed in. The battle had begun, and the remaining heroes filed in to help in the fight. Grog stood his ground as the creature called upon supernatural abilities and viciously attacked. The heroes responded in kind with deadly melee and magical attacks, but everything they did seemed to have been dulled by its Outsider influence. Cha’ti summoned wolves to help in the fight, and Twexlin fired arrows into the evil beast as Nyphystra and Grog stood toe to claw with it. The Ebon Aspect summoned some hellish weapon of force to help it in the battle. H.S. Called upon his healing powers to help keep the combatants alive, but as he moved through the battle he was attacked by the Allip he had turned in the previous battle. The evil undead drew some of H.S.’s wisdom from him but it paid for its actions. H.S. utterly destroyed the creature before it could do more harm to him or his comrades. The acolyte attempted to help the party by striking Twexlin with some magic missiles, but before Twexlin was able to return fire of his own, the Ebon Aspect summoned his minion forth. As the acolyte approached the Ebon Aspect reached down with one of his clawed hands and ripped the humans head off drawing upon his life force. It appeared the Ebon Aspect had just recovered many of the wounds he had received up til then. The battle raged back and forth as combatants shared blows. Just as it looked like the Ebon Aspect was about to take one of his foes lives, H.S. was quickly in reach of healing aid, keeping Nyphystra alive to continue the fight. Grog slowly retreated as he bled from multiple wounds. Cha’ti sent his loyal companion Shadow into the fray. Cha’ti attempted a fire spell, but it had no effect on the evil Outsider. Just as the Ebon Aspect and his weapon of force wreaked havoc on his enemy, Shadow came in and ripped into the large creature taking it down by the groin and bleeding it out. As the Ebon Aspect fell to his death his weapon of force struck its final blow laying Grog low, but not slaying the half orc. The battle ended as quickly as it started, and the heroes stood in awe of what they just survived. Truly this was the final battle for the Dark Cathedral, but what was truly earned, and what questions were answered, it seemed like they now had more questions than answers. I closed my scry pondering on the results of their battle, and what they were able to accomplish. I really felt that the visions were true, and this was the party of heroes we were in search of all these months. I looked forward to what lay ahead for all of us.
