Forgotten Realms: Age of Worms
Whispering Cairn, Lair of the Laborers, Session Five
Scrying on the party the next day brought a sense of excited nervousness. I looked forward to seeing what they would find or encounter while exploring the half submerged lair. As the parties scout Grog approached where they left off before resting I realized that the water level had increased by more then four feet causing the entire room to be submerged. I could tell by the facial expressions they did not look forward to swimming in the dark water. Nyphystra decided to keep her armor on and just strolled into the water, along with Grog, but before they could continue to far into the room they were assaulted by an insane water elemental. The evil elemental put up a good fight, but between Nyphystra’s great sword, Grog’s Great spear, and a summoned porpoise by Cha’ti the creature dispersed quickly to a watery death. After assessing the parties’ status they continued to wade into the water holding breath as they submerged. I had thought it not wise seeing them split up, but they ended up seeing more and no harm came to them as they swam around. Grog fought off a Ghoul as he entered a side room, and Nyphystra and Azeryth was able to locate another seeker corpse in the side room they searched. The dead seeker had the missing red lantern in his possession which appears to be required for the party to figure out the cairns secrets. Once the party completed exploring the lair of the laborers they climbed back to the gallery of lanterns where they quickly lit the lanterns and was able to figure out that the elevated passage above the blue lantern was now accessible; the angry faced wall was gone and opened up into another section. Grog scouted a bit of it, but the party called him back to explore the other access elevators first. The party found that the mechanical elevator under the indigo lantern was actually a trap, but if it had not been for Nyphystra spotting the bone fragments within the open doors I’m certain she would have shared the same fate. Grog was able to confirm that it was a trap and they decided to investigate the yellow lanterns elevator. With some precursory scouting Grog confirmed another section of the cairn, and they all used the elevator to descend into another level. The room they stood within ended up being trapped, but Grog was able to disable the devious trap. When the stone block elevated allowing a look at the tunnel that led deeper into the cairn I observed several statues similar to the one on the sarcophagus. I was intrigued, because now it dawned on me that the statues depicted an ancient Djinni race that hailed from Calimshan, and was crucial to the downfall of Memnon during the Era of Skyfire. Skyfire was an epic battle between the Wind Dukes of Calim, and the Memnonnar who were led by a powerful Efreeti General who led the armies of Kossuth the Lord of Fire. I could not hold my excitement; I now feel that the divinations were correct on searching out this cairn. I hope our young heroes are prepared for what I can only expect will happen in the months to come.
