Whispering Cairn Unleashes Havoc, Session Three

As I sat scrying from my private chamber I watched the party of young adventurers continue investigating the Whispering Cairn. The first encounter of the previous day proved the party could fare well against a pack of hungry wolves. I looked forward to seeing what the next day brought them. It did not take long for them to find more trouble. While searching the Gallery of Seven Lanterns the group found a secret tunnel that was elevated above the blue lantern. Grog used his roguish skills to investigate further and found a very dangerous pressure plate trap that was triggered during his attempt at disabling. From what I could discern the trigger caused the angry face on the wall to scream a powerful force of air and create a hypnotic type of light that stunned the half-orc. If it was not for Azeryth’s quick action by throwing a tangle bag, and Grog’s dexterous skill the rogue would have fallen to his death. The party must have decided to leave the trap alone and try searching another part of the cairn. The group pushed the ancient sarcophagus clockwise and was able to figure out that the Yellow lantern had a elevator shaft that descended to lower levels. Deciding to try the Green lantern since it also had a elevator shaft descend to lower levels the party again shifted the sarcophagus. Within seconds the elevator collapsed in upon itself and what followed next was horrific. A giant swarm of blue carapace acid beetles erupted from the damaged shaft, along with a Mad Slasher. The party quickly retreated but attempted a stand trying to fight the threats, but found quickly that they were ill prepared or over-matched. Azeryth struck the swarm with a magic missile, and Grog struck the swarm with a vial of acid, but the swarm kept coming. Grog retreated realizing he had no other way of hurting the swarm. The ranger Twexlin and Nyphistra the fighter struck at the Mad Slasher dealing blows by arrow and sword. Cha’ti created some obstacles by summoning some animals, but it hardly slowed the assault of the beetle swarm. Once the party dispatched the Mad Slasher they soon realized how dangerous the situation had become. Twexlin retreated from the swarm as did Cha’ti. Nyphystra valiantly tried to draw the swarm away from the party while Azeryth charged his hands with electricity unleashing it upon the swarm. The shocking grasp spell was not enough to destroy the swarm, and seeing he was in trouble Azeryth yelled for help. Nyphystra again risked her life by trying to draw the swarm away and in doing so was overcome and taken down by the beetles. Azeryth looked to levitate out of the swarm as he pulled a wand, but if it had not been for a life saving curative spell from Cha’ti the wizard would surely have fallen. As Nyphystra was being eaten alive, Azeryth struck the swarm down with a magical bolt from his wand. The magic missile was just enough to disperse what was left of the swarm. The party quickly retreated pulling the wounded from the gallery. Twexlin returned with makeshift torches, but it was too late. Grog appeared from the shadows, and the party retreated to the empty wolf den to try and heal the battle wounds they received. While Nyphystra lay unconscious, and Cha’ti and Azeryth rested, Grog and Twexlin decided to go back to town and re-equip as well as return the Alpha wolfs head for a reward. As I closed my scry device, I realized I was sitting in my own sweat and breathing heavy as if I had been in the battle with the young adventurers. I smiled to myself thinking how lucky these young adventurers were considering how ill prepared they were when the swarm struck.
